    • Note: If you are setting up a new box (rather than switching from Win to Linux on the same box) you must reset the Cable Modem to get it to bind to the MAC address of the new NIC (Network Interface Card). The Motorola units have a reset switch and can also just be power cycled but the newer SURFboard SB3100's hold thier settings (even over night) and have to be reset via thier built in web control page which is accessable at http://192.168.100.1 from any connected browser. Just hit the reset button on the control page. Alex [ninjalex at home.com] offers a more general solution:

      ...before moving the cat5 cable, I used winipcfg and released my lease on my ip, and moved the cable. I then ran dchpcd -h <cox account here>. when going back the other way I ran dchpcd -<don't remember the switch, but it's on the man page or by using the --help switch> to release the lease on the linux box, moved the cable, ran winipcfg on the 98 box and clicked on renew lease...
